Here's my hot read to warm up your chilly winter night. It's from Naughty Balls, a story I wrote that's included in the Naughty Hearts boxed set. Naughty Balls is a New Adult romance featuring two college basketball players alone on Valentine’s Day night. (M/F)

“I tell you what.” He was already close, and shifted so he was even closer.
I stared at his chest to avoid getting trapped by his gaze again. Not the best idea to avoid distraction. His chest was ripped like the rest of him and shiny with sweat. Not gross sweat. Sexy sweat.
I wanted to lick it.
I blinked, startled by the thought.
I wanted to lick Orlando Havens’ chest.
Actually, I wanted to do a lot more than lick Orlando’s chest.
He put a finger under my chin and raised my head so I’d have to look him in the eyes. His gaze was curiously intense. He said, “If we’re gonna play, someone oughta pay.”
I scrunched my eyebrows together.
He went on, “Let’s make a bet. You win, you get my manager’s name and
number. I win, I...get...you.”
“You...what?” I was so far out of my depth I was drowning.
He grinned at me.
I breathed, felt, thought, then breathed again. Heavily. “That’s not exactly Sophie’s choice,” I said slowly. “But it’s a tough one.”
“Yeah?” His smile was a little smug and a lot sexy.
OMG. I realized with more than a little surprise that he was really interested in me. Not only as an athlete, but as a person.
As a woman.
Who’da thunk it? Not me.
I found myself grinning. “This is great. I win either way.” I looked him in the eyes again and allowed my eyelashes to flutter. “Don’t I?”
“So do I. I reckon I already won.”
“How’s that?”
“I didn’t know you liked me.”
My mouth dropped open. “Of course I do. Who doesn’t?”
He humphed. “A lot of people. And a lot of folks just wanna use me. You better look out for that, too, girl.”
“If anyone’s using me, I haven’t noticed.”
“You just got here, l’il Ms. Freshman. Come March Madness, people ’round here are gonna notice you even if you don’t bother noticing them. You’re gonna get hit on like you’re a punching bag.”
“Hm.” Nerves twitched in my belly. Starting to sweat, I unzipped my hoodie. “What do I do about it?”
“I’ll watch your back if you watch mine. If you want.”
“Oh, I want.” I again looked him square in the eyes. “I definitely want.”

My Life and Times in TV – The Real Blues at 11--by Rebecca Grace

Meet Rebecca Grace, a.k.a. Becky Martinez.

She's a former broadcast journalist who has worked in TV newsrooms from San Diego to Seattle and from Denver to Los Angeles with a stop in Las Vegas for good measure. After 30 years she left the newsroom for five years in public relations before turning to the world of fiction writing full time. She also teaches writing classes online and has presented workshops at a number of writing conferences.

Her latest book, Blues at 11, is a humorous mystery, set in the world of a Los Angeles television journalist.

What happens when a well-known TV anchorwoman finds herself suspected of murder?

Her last book was  Dead Man’s Rules, published by The Wild Rose Press and released in January 2014. It is the first of a three book series. She has also written three other romantic suspense novels, three romances and several short stories.

Take it away, Rebecca!

When I tell the story of working in television news my stories always start with – “I had a lucky break because…”  and end with “then everyone got fired, or at least I did.”

Such can be the life when you work either as a reporter, anchor or manager. Not everyone ends up in those circumstances—I’ve known quite a few people who stayed in one place for decades, but it probably happens a lot more than in other jobs. Many people move from job to job and from city to city working in the fast paced world of television newsrooms.

Some of that quick changing mentality was what I used when I wrote my new mystery, Blues at 11, about my anchorwoman who is accused of being a murderer.  I wanted to convey how quickly fortunes can change in the news business. You’d think I wouldn’t have kept going back into it, but I did, over four decades and at 7 different stations, two of which I worked for twice.

Here’s a blurb for Blues at 11:

Kimberly delaGarza is a familiar name and face to television news viewers in Los Angeles. She anchors the 6 and 11pm news. But now she has been accused of murder and everything is turning upside down. No one believes she didn’t kill her cheating rat of an ex-boyfriend.  Instead of wearing designer clothes, she may end up wearing prison orange and her home may no longer be a beach front house, but a cell in the Big House.

And the only person she can turn to for help is the man she once dumped for the cheating rat.

Oops!

 Here’s an excerpt:
“Someone needs to find the killer,” I said. “What if he’s after me too? Think about
Lindy’s accident. She was driving my car. The hit and run driver might have been after me.”
Hank waved an impatient hand. “From what I’ve heard, she was driving too fast and may have been racing the other car.”
“She told me she was careful.”
“You think she’d tell the truth if she was racing? Look, I would appreciate it if you hired a PI and left my dad out of this.”
“All you’re worried about is looking bad for your mayor and rich people like the Brookings family. I’m sure they’ll give you a nice contribution to your next campaign for providing personal attention.”
“I am not elected,” he said through gritted teeth.
“But you are worried about your job and appearances. Isn’t that why you were making such a big deal out of my ‘security arrangement’ with your dad?” It was my turn to hold up the quote fingers.
The coldness that grew in his eyes was like an approaching glacier. “Look, I know what's happening. You’re doing your normal Kimberly crap.”
His harsh words smacked into me like a slap of hard wind to my face. “My what?”
He unloaded on me with the force of a blizzard. “You’re a pampered princess who is so damned used to getting your own way that you can’t handle it when the real world invades your private fantasy life! Well, it’s here, lady, and it’s real. But I won’t stand by and let you hurt my father by getting him involved.”

#50Shades of Professional Jealousy

Today my sexy snippet is coming to you with a little bit of editorializing. Okay, a lot.

For a while now--since the Fifty Shades trilogy attained prominence--there's been a steady stream of online bloggers and critics dissing the books...and for good reason. They're poorly written and edited. Fifty Shades is basically a Harlequin Presents with sugar kink.

One of my old Harlequins, written under
 a different pseudonym.
Let's look at the main characters, for example. Ana Steele is a perfect Harlequin heroine: still a virgin while about to graduate college (ridiculous--do you know anyone like that???). She is so immature she appears to have some sort of disorder. Even though male after male in her life is attracted to her, she's so sweet and modest that she's unaware of her sexiness. And  she's immediately, deeply and irrevocably attracted to the "hero." This is also a characteristic of the typical Harlequin heroine, even though artificial conflicts are created to provide some kind of story line. Otherwise the books would be over before they've properly started.

The "hero." Ah, Christian Grey. Volumes have already been written about his abusive behavior. He stalks Ana, forces her to ditch her friends, especially her male buddies. He pressures her into a kinky relationship she is too emotionally immature to handle.

Skimming only two or three Harlequins will reveal the strong similarities between Grey and the basic Harlequin alpha male. The macho guy who's really a broken child inside. Fantastically wealthy at an absurdly young age--has anyone else noticed how millionaires are no longer acceptable romance heroes? Billionaires only in this club.

When I was writing for Harlequin/Silhouette, I would go through the books and highlight what appeared to be necessary character notes of the H&H. Her virginity and innocence. His contrasting wealth and sophistication. Her blushing confusion. His Rolex, limos and private plane. I've employed all these tropes.

Perfect ingredients of a classic BDSM power exchange? NOT. Those of us honestly involved in safe, sane and consensual BDSM avoid an unsophisticated partner until that innocent has been educated.

Setting aside the cliched characters, the writing is poorly edited, if it was edited at all. Here's an discussion of one craft aspect with an analysis from one of my writing manuals, Plotting and Planning:

For many, creating paragraphs in fiction—that is, dividing parts of a scene or
interaction into manageable bits—is such an obvious process that it doesn’t need discussion. (Non-fiction is completely different and beyond the scope of this treatise). In Starting From Scratch, Rita Mae Brown doesn’t discuss paragraphs in fiction at all. I also had thought it was fairly easy until I encountered Fifty Shades of Grey, which contained selections like the following:

“Very well, Mr. Grey,” she mutters, then exits. He frowns, and turns his attention back to me.

“Where were we, Ms. Steele?”

Oh, we’re back to Ms. Steele now.

“Please, don’t let me keep you from anything.”

Normally, when we write interactions between people, the actions, words, and thoughts of each person are grouped in separate paragraphs. When we switch people, we create a new paragraph. So this selection should have been written thusly:

“Very well, Mr. Grey,” she mutters, then exits.

He frowns, and turns his attention back to me. “Where were we, Ms. Steele?”

Oh, we’re back to Ms. Steele now. “Please, don’t let me keep you from anything.”

What’s the reason behind this convention? So the reader can know who’s thinking and talking, we place the identifying dialog tag along with the dialog. Often we may not need a tag at all, when only two people are interacting. The convention makes this possible. Readers know that when a paragraph ends, the next paragraph belongs to another character.

The bloggers and critics who slam Fifty Shades are mostly romance and erotica authors. And more than a little of our resentment is that old bugaboo, professional jealousy.

And who can blame us? It's hard to feel all warm and cuddly about E.L. James' success when she so obviously does not deserve the millions she's raking in. The writing is so bad that she clearly did not spend the years that most of us do developing our craft. We feel she doesn't deserve her success, at least not based on the books. All of us have an early manuscript that should never see the light of day, let alone publication. E.L. James' has, and it's a massive bestseller. It's galling.

I once wrote about professional jealousy that it has at its root cause an unhealthy interest in others. I still believe that. I know nothing about E.L. James. She is completely irrelevant to me. Her success does not equal my failure--in fact, the popularity of her books could increase the popularity of mine.

And she could be the happiest person in the world or one of the most miserable. I don't know.

But what I do know is that I have been the target of resentment because of my "success." Imagine that! A floundering midlist author the object of professional jealousy! Blew me away, too.

It happens that the time I noticed that was when my father was dying. I was stunned that anyone would be envious of me.

The lesson? The woman we resent for her success may be the most distressed and tortured human being walking this planet. We just don't know--it's our nature to put on a brave face while inside we're screaming in pain. It's also our nature to compete, but we must learn to maturely deal with the emotions that result from competition.

And this has been a very lengthy introduction to my sexy snippet. Perilous Play is a memoir that's only lightly fictionalized to conceal the names of a few of the characters, most notably, the anti-hero. I call him Trapper Hart, and here's how we met. The scene is set when I attended law school.

BTW I was not a virgin.

One day, mentally drained after a con law midterm, I left the classroom to find a tall, well-built guy lingering outside. Smiling, he engaged me in conversation, and I tried to seem really interesting because, articulate and attractive, he was everything I looked for in a man.

He didn’t ask me out right away. We started our friendship in the library, where he’d bring me cappuccinos—wet with extra foam, and treats—he knew I liked double fudge brownies with nuts.  He’d found out what I liked, and I luxuriated in the notion that he really cared. I didn’t know this man well, but he had a knack for getting under my defenses. I’d had numerous boyfriends, and none had ever bothered to discover my cappuccino and brownie preferences.

If you want to read more, find the book here:

If you want to read Plotting and Planning, find it here:

Both are only 99 cents. Don't get me started on the devaluation of books
because so many of us underprice our writing. I've been forced to jump on that bandwagon and resent it more than I resent E.L. James' success.

One Sexy Night from Viking in Tartan (Naughty List) by Suz deMello (#99cents #boxedset @naughtyliterati)

The assignment from TPTB at My Sexy Saturday is...One Sexy Night. A thundering sea, a damsel in distress and her brave rescuer add up to one sexy night for Rhona Kilbirnie, the heroine of Viking in Tartan.

In this short story, the advent of a Viking raider to medieval Scotland brings major changes to little Clan Kilbirnie.

And here's my sexy seven paragraphs:

“Look at me.” He gently squeezed her hands, which felt good.
She raised her gaze to his. His eyes were deep as the ocean and as compelling as the wild wind that had called her to freedom—or death—that night.
“Nothing will happen to you that you do not desire.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I know what you need, dear one.”
Dear one. Her mother had called Rhona that when she’d been wee, before Mam had died in childbed. Rhona’s heart twisted in pain, then wrenched wide open and let him in.
Leaning forward, Erland stroked her cheek, gazed into her eyes and set his lips on hers.
Cool they were, but with an underlying fire. Letting her eyes drift shut, she pushed her mouth against his, sure he held the key, knew the secret, could give her everything she’d ever wanted.
From where had that crazed thought sprung?

If you like what you read, get the Naughty List, the anthology in which this sexy shortie is published. The Naughty List is far from your usual vapid fare about kissing under the mistletoe and random sex at office Christmas parties. No--we have stories from the steamiest erotica to the most heart-warming happily ever after. We have medievals and futuristics,  ménages and committed couples rediscovering love. You want romance? You want hot sex? We have it all.

A Hot Encounter from FOR MY MASTER--a foursome, anyone?

The edict from TPTB at the Book Boyfriends Cafe weekly blog hop is to give y'all a "Hot Encounter" between our H&H. Or, in the case of menage authors, our H&H&H. Or maybe, as in the below scene, our H&H&H&H.

Here's part of the hot hot hot scene. Don't want to give you too much--you'll have to read the entire story for that!

Toby pulled Kathie's thighs apart. Her hips jerked involuntarily and she moaned. Darla chuckled and tugged on the nubbin of proud flesh before plunging one long, red-tipped finger into Kathie’s slit. Excitement shot through her. She cried out, startled by the invasion, more shocked by her response to a woman.

Ross leaned over and thrust his tongue into her open mouth as she came, his hands on her breasts. Darla withdrew and massaged Kathie’s clit.

Writhing within her bonds, Kathie opened her eyes to look deep into Ross’s brown gaze. Beyond him, she could see Darla kissing Toby while continuing to play with Kathie’s cunt, alternately fingering her snatch and flicking her clit.

Another hand touched her—a man’s hand, she thought. But the hand couldn’t belong to Ross—he was cupping her breasts and pinching her nipples, which was unbelievably arousing, combined as it was with Darla’s fingers in Kathie’s pussy. Toby was stroking Kathie’s inner thighs up and down with gentle fingertips. The lazy caress kept her pulsing.

She didn’t stop coming until Darla stopped. Ross straightened to unzip his shorts while Toby urged Darla to bend over the table between Kathie’s spread legs. Darla kissed Kathie’s naked cunt while presenting her raised ass to her partner, who lifted her skirt and opened his pants. He had a long cock—not as thick as Ross’s or as dark, but quite a tool nevertheless. Kathie’s pulse quickened as she watched, watched and anticipated with a rush of honey moistening her pussy. She pushed her cunt harder into Darla’s lips.

Toby fondled himself for a moment then aimed his rod to enter Darla from behind with a long, slow surge. Darla’s gasp sent warm breath floating over Kathie’s clit while she watched Toby grip Darla’s round hips as he took her.

She’d never thought she’d take part in such a dirty, sexy scene and didn’t know how she felt about it. The she remembered what Ross had said. Just let go…

Here's what the story is about:

Agent Kathie Belmont has long lusted after her boss, Ross Guerrero, but has never plucked up the courage to even flirt with him. Could he be the strong but tender Master she craves?

Ross wants Kathie in his life—on her knees. But the constraints of their jobs with an ultra-secret US security agency have come between them.

Then the sadistic drug trafficker El Silencio is tempted into a deal with Ross’s undercover persona—a deal that will go down at a BDSM party. With Kathie disguised as his sex slave, Ross sets out to bring down the criminal gang, and perhaps to tempt Kathie into performing her role for him…forever.

Why Short? Why Sexy? Why Now? The World According to Eva Lefoy

Hello, Eva! Soooo....tell us! Why short? Why sexy? Why now?

Well, okay:

I have a confession to make about my reading habits. I like to read short works – less than 60 pages please! – and I like them hot and sexy. Why? Well, I like to read smexy stuff * grins * and I don’t have a lot of time to read.

Sound familiar?

In an era where most of my day is time-slotted with task after task, it’s tough to find much time that’s free. Remember free time? I do, and I’m sorely missing it! Most of the week my day looks something like this:

6:30 get up
7:00 shower
8:00 be at work
12:00 go home bake cupcakes for mom
1:00 back at work
5:00 hit the gym
6:00 get home for dinner, eat, do dishes, do laundry, clean, check email, feed the cat, etc.
8:00 be at mom and dad’s
10:00 get home and go to bed

The schedule sometimes doesn’t change much for the whole week, and then I wake up on Saturday morning and wonder, why didn’t I get a haircut this week like I wanted to? Why didn’t I make it to yoga class like I should have? Why isn’t that book I’m working on finished yet?

Well, it’s like most things. If I can’t schedule a block of time to do it, it’s hard to get ‘er done!

I’m thinking most of the readers out there today are a lot like me. They don’t have much time to sit down and read – maybe five minutes here, ten minutes there – and it can be difficult to sink into a story and then get yanked out of it ten pages later when dinner’s boiling over on the stove. So I really like when I find shorts that I can finish in one sitting. One book I found offers a collection of all kinds of stories – horror, paranormal, romance, urban fantasy, science fiction, etc. – is called “Stories on the Go, 101 very short stories by 101 authors.” It’s FREE on Amazon if you want to check it out.

I tried it, I loved some of the stories and decided that if such book existed for “regular” genres, why not one for romance and erotica too?

Since it was the end of the 2014, and the New Year was upon us, I quickly solidified my idea to create books full of sexy stories that readers can take with them on the go. Along the way, I recruited some terrific authors to join me, and now there’s Sexy to Go!

Find "Love Refocused" by Nancy Corrigan, book Two of the Sander's Valley series

Wyn Sander is surprised when his brother Kyle asks him to be best man at his wedding. Wyn’s even more shocked to learn the woman who later walks into his garage is Ronnie’s half-sister, Iona. He’s instantly attracted to her. She’s sophisticated, beautiful, and confident. At least she is until Wyn stands up. She flinches and a look of terror passes over her face. It bothers him to see. Luckily, desire replaces it, but it doesn’t stop Wyn’s curiosity. For the first time in his life, he wants to find out what made Iona fearful and fix it.

Iona can’t believe her luck. The man she lusts after is her new sister’s soon to be brother-in-law. The kiss they share shatters her, but her attempt to stop any involvement with him ends up with her agreeing to three dates. She decides Wyn is unlike any man she’s ever known, and it’s unfortunate she can’t enjoy him. She isn’t in the market for a boyfriend. All she wants is sex. The only problem is—she doesn’t think Wyn sees things her way.

But...
When Wyn sees Iona, he falls hard. Iona's not so sure—their chemistry is explosive, but after a bad relationship she's not sure she can commit again.

Here's an excerpt to tickle your fancy. Don't worry--it's okay for work.

Iona knelt next to the whelping box. Her heart raced and hands shook. She glanced over her shoulder. Wyn crouched near her, his gaze on her, not the adorable puppies they’d come to see. Lust simmered in his eyes, but so did curiosity. She got the impression he was judging her. Why, she didn’t have a clue. She’d made it clear her contact with dogs had been hands-off. She’d petted a few. That was it.

“I’m nervous.” Both at the prospect of holding one of the pups and the reason behind his focused study.

“You’ll do fine.”

He laid a hand on her back. The simple touch calmed her. She peeked into the box. Lucy, the puppies’ mother, lay on her side. Her watchful gaze tracked Iona’s every movement. “Are you sure she won’t mind if I hold one?”

“Maybe, but she won’t bite you. Her pups just turned three weeks. It’s time to start holding them. Get them used to humans, you know?”

She nodded, even though she didn’t understand.

Wyn moved closer. His stomach pressed against her bottom. He leaned over her and held a hand out to Lucy. No desire accompanied the brush of his body to hers. Reassurance did. She relaxed. So did the dog. Lucy tilted her head for Wyn’s scratch, and the short nub of her tail wiggled.

Iona laughed. Wyn glanced at her, brows raised and a question in his eyes. She pointed to Lucy’s stump of a tail. “That’s cute.”

He flashed her a half smile. One dimple formed with his grin, and her heart did a little flip. Her lover was devastatingly handsome. Did he know what one of his grins did to her? That seeing his dimples aroused her yet made her want to snuggle closer at the same time?

Author Bio
A true romantic at heart, Nancy Corrigan is convinced there’s a knight in shining armor for
every woman (or man), but you won’t find damsels in distress in her stories. She adores pairing alpha heroes with women strong enough to match them and bring them to their knees. She also enjoys flipping the traditional roles in romances because her motto is—love and people should never be forced to conform to anyone’s norm.

She holds a degree in chemistry and has worked in research but now focuses on ensuring quality. She considers it the perfect outlet for her as she’s the first to admit she has some OCD tendencies. It carries over into her writing life too. While engrossed in a novel, she has a habit of forgetting to eat and sleep. Fortunately, she’s married to her own knight in shining armor who understands her oddities and loves her anyway. They reside in Pennsylvania with their three children, dog, snake and guinea pigs. Her other interests include tattoos, animals, classic cars and all things spooky and sexy.

A Sexy Sporty V-Day Snippet (#99cents #romance #NewAdult #boxedset #sexysnippets)

It's been my pleasure to participate in three boxed sets in the last few months. Working with other authors has been very gratifying, stimulating and inspiring.

I wrote Naughty Balls for the Naughty Literati's new Valentine's Day boxed set. Candidly, I've never cared for Valentine's Day, especially since I rarely have a date for that evening. There's nothing more calculated to make a person feel like a loser, but with time I have come to realize that unless a relationship is on a very firm foundation, one can't expect a V-Day date. And as I'm dating around at this point, I'm destined to spend V-Day with my computer watching cat videos on Facebook.

Oh,well.

That was the fate confronting my heroine, Penny, in Naughty Balls. But, being an avid basketball player, she instead went to shoot a few hoops in her college gym, where she found Orlando Havens, another player without a date on V-Day night.

So here's my seven-sentence sexy snippet...

But wait! you cry. Who are the Naughty Literati?

We’re a group of authors who’ve come together to showcase our epic talents in stories filled with powerful eroticism and satisfying romance. Our tales range from heartwarming and sweet to scorching hot erotic; medieval to futuristic; humans to aliens and shape-shifters; vanilla committed couples to kinky ménage fun.

FMI: http://www.naughtyliterati.com

Now, here's the snippet:

I stared at his chest to avoid getting trapped by his gaze again. But his chest was ripped like the rest of him and shiny with sweat. Not gross sweat, sexy sweat.

I wanted to lick it.

I blinked, startled by the thought.

I wanted to lick Orlando Havens’ chest.

Actually, I wanted to do a lot more than lick Orlando’s chest.
