It's a very Naughty Spring Fling! (@naughtyliterati #boxedset #99cents)

It's finally here! And it's wonderful!

The Naughty Literati have given birth to another boxed set--our third in about six months (and yes, it's been exhausting).

I'm very proud of this anthology. The stories are marvelous and Nicole Austin, our cover artist, has, as usual, outdone herself. She just gets better and better!

Here's a snippet from my story, Spring Training. It's about a hot baseball pitcher who gets very special training...

She practically dragged him to her room, and once she’d gotten him inside, slammed him into the wall and tore off his jacket. “Nice of you to dress properly,” she murmured while she made quick work of his tie, then ripped his shirt open.

“You too.” He grabbed her head and pulled her in to kiss her hard on the lips. “I practically came in my pants when you walked into the room. I’ve been hot for you all fuckin’ day long.”

He shoved his tongue into her mouth. Pain lanced through him, starting where she’d bitten his tongue. “If I want your tongue, I’ll go in and get it,” she snapped.

He jerked back and stared at her, jaw slightly agape.

“Have you done this before? Not sex, but giving up control to your partner?”

“Not really,” he said slowly. “Not as such... I mean, there have been times that a woman pushed me down and mounted me, but nothing stated. Nothing blatant.”

She slid her hand into his hair and clenched her fist, holding him tightly. “Nothing like this.”

His scalp tingled. Tears started in his eyes and he blinked. His cock jerked, hardened. “No, nothing like this.”

She released her grip to rub his scalp, and the tingling faded, replaced by warmth. “Okay, so you’re a newbie. Why did you agree to give yourself to me so quickly?”

Give yourself to me. A shudder ran through his body. “The very thought of it... It’s hot as hell. You’re hot as hell. And your confidence is a big part of it.”

She grinned again. “Do you have any idea what’s going to happen?”

He shook his head.

Here's my hot read to warm up your chilly winter night. It's from Naughty Balls, a story I wrote that's included in the Naughty Hearts boxed set. Naughty Balls is a New Adult romance featuring two college basketball players alone on Valentine’s Day night. (M/F)

“I tell you what.” He was already close, and shifted so he was even closer.
I stared at his chest to avoid getting trapped by his gaze again. Not the best idea to avoid distraction. His chest was ripped like the rest of him and shiny with sweat. Not gross sweat. Sexy sweat.
I wanted to lick it.
I blinked, startled by the thought.
I wanted to lick Orlando Havens’ chest.
Actually, I wanted to do a lot more than lick Orlando’s chest.
He put a finger under my chin and raised my head so I’d have to look him in the eyes. His gaze was curiously intense. He said, “If we’re gonna play, someone oughta pay.”
I scrunched my eyebrows together.
He went on, “Let’s make a bet. You win, you get my manager’s name and
number. I win, I...get...you.”
“You...what?” I was so far out of my depth I was drowning.
He grinned at me.
I breathed, felt, thought, then breathed again. Heavily. “That’s not exactly Sophie’s choice,” I said slowly. “But it’s a tough one.”
“Yeah?” His smile was a little smug and a lot sexy.
OMG. I realized with more than a little surprise that he was really interested in me. Not only as an athlete, but as a person.
As a woman.
Who’da thunk it? Not me.
I found myself grinning. “This is great. I win either way.” I looked him in the eyes again and allowed my eyelashes to flutter. “Don’t I?”
“So do I. I reckon I already won.”
“How’s that?”
“I didn’t know you liked me.”
My mouth dropped open. “Of course I do. Who doesn’t?”
He humphed. “A lot of people. And a lot of folks just wanna use me. You better look out for that, too, girl.”
“If anyone’s using me, I haven’t noticed.”
“You just got here, l’il Ms. Freshman. Come March Madness, people ’round here are gonna notice you even if you don’t bother noticing them. You’re gonna get hit on like you’re a punching bag.”
“Hm.” Nerves twitched in my belly. Starting to sweat, I unzipped my hoodie. “What do I do about it?”
“I’ll watch your back if you watch mine. If you want.”
“Oh, I want.” I again looked him square in the eyes. “I definitely want.”

#50Shades of Professional Jealousy

Today my sexy snippet is coming to you with a little bit of editorializing. Okay, a lot.

For a while now--since the Fifty Shades trilogy attained prominence--there's been a steady stream of online bloggers and critics dissing the books...and for good reason. They're poorly written and edited. Fifty Shades is basically a Harlequin Presents with sugar kink.

One of my old Harlequins, written under
 a different pseudonym.
Let's look at the main characters, for example. Ana Steele is a perfect Harlequin heroine: still a virgin while about to graduate college (ridiculous--do you know anyone like that???). She is so immature she appears to have some sort of disorder. Even though male after male in her life is attracted to her, she's so sweet and modest that she's unaware of her sexiness. And  she's immediately, deeply and irrevocably attracted to the "hero." This is also a characteristic of the typical Harlequin heroine, even though artificial conflicts are created to provide some kind of story line. Otherwise the books would be over before they've properly started.

The "hero." Ah, Christian Grey. Volumes have already been written about his abusive behavior. He stalks Ana, forces her to ditch her friends, especially her male buddies. He pressures her into a kinky relationship she is too emotionally immature to handle.

Skimming only two or three Harlequins will reveal the strong similarities between Grey and the basic Harlequin alpha male. The macho guy who's really a broken child inside. Fantastically wealthy at an absurdly young age--has anyone else noticed how millionaires are no longer acceptable romance heroes? Billionaires only in this club.

When I was writing for Harlequin/Silhouette, I would go through the books and highlight what appeared to be necessary character notes of the H&H. Her virginity and innocence. His contrasting wealth and sophistication. Her blushing confusion. His Rolex, limos and private plane. I've employed all these tropes.

Perfect ingredients of a classic BDSM power exchange? NOT. Those of us honestly involved in safe, sane and consensual BDSM avoid an unsophisticated partner until that innocent has been educated.

Setting aside the cliched characters, the writing is poorly edited, if it was edited at all. Here's an discussion of one craft aspect with an analysis from one of my writing manuals, Plotting and Planning:

For many, creating paragraphs in fiction—that is, dividing parts of a scene or
interaction into manageable bits—is such an obvious process that it doesn’t need discussion. (Non-fiction is completely different and beyond the scope of this treatise). In Starting From Scratch, Rita Mae Brown doesn’t discuss paragraphs in fiction at all. I also had thought it was fairly easy until I encountered Fifty Shades of Grey, which contained selections like the following:

“Very well, Mr. Grey,” she mutters, then exits. He frowns, and turns his attention back to me.

“Where were we, Ms. Steele?”

Oh, we’re back to Ms. Steele now.

“Please, don’t let me keep you from anything.”

Normally, when we write interactions between people, the actions, words, and thoughts of each person are grouped in separate paragraphs. When we switch people, we create a new paragraph. So this selection should have been written thusly:

“Very well, Mr. Grey,” she mutters, then exits.

He frowns, and turns his attention back to me. “Where were we, Ms. Steele?”

Oh, we’re back to Ms. Steele now. “Please, don’t let me keep you from anything.”

What’s the reason behind this convention? So the reader can know who’s thinking and talking, we place the identifying dialog tag along with the dialog. Often we may not need a tag at all, when only two people are interacting. The convention makes this possible. Readers know that when a paragraph ends, the next paragraph belongs to another character.

The bloggers and critics who slam Fifty Shades are mostly romance and erotica authors. And more than a little of our resentment is that old bugaboo, professional jealousy.

And who can blame us? It's hard to feel all warm and cuddly about E.L. James' success when she so obviously does not deserve the millions she's raking in. The writing is so bad that she clearly did not spend the years that most of us do developing our craft. We feel she doesn't deserve her success, at least not based on the books. All of us have an early manuscript that should never see the light of day, let alone publication. E.L. James' has, and it's a massive bestseller. It's galling.

I once wrote about professional jealousy that it has at its root cause an unhealthy interest in others. I still believe that. I know nothing about E.L. James. She is completely irrelevant to me. Her success does not equal my failure--in fact, the popularity of her books could increase the popularity of mine.

And she could be the happiest person in the world or one of the most miserable. I don't know.

But what I do know is that I have been the target of resentment because of my "success." Imagine that! A floundering midlist author the object of professional jealousy! Blew me away, too.

It happens that the time I noticed that was when my father was dying. I was stunned that anyone would be envious of me.

The lesson? The woman we resent for her success may be the most distressed and tortured human being walking this planet. We just don't know--it's our nature to put on a brave face while inside we're screaming in pain. It's also our nature to compete, but we must learn to maturely deal with the emotions that result from competition.

And this has been a very lengthy introduction to my sexy snippet. Perilous Play is a memoir that's only lightly fictionalized to conceal the names of a few of the characters, most notably, the anti-hero. I call him Trapper Hart, and here's how we met. The scene is set when I attended law school.

BTW I was not a virgin.

One day, mentally drained after a con law midterm, I left the classroom to find a tall, well-built guy lingering outside. Smiling, he engaged me in conversation, and I tried to seem really interesting because, articulate and attractive, he was everything I looked for in a man.

He didn’t ask me out right away. We started our friendship in the library, where he’d bring me cappuccinos—wet with extra foam, and treats—he knew I liked double fudge brownies with nuts.  He’d found out what I liked, and I luxuriated in the notion that he really cared. I didn’t know this man well, but he had a knack for getting under my defenses. I’d had numerous boyfriends, and none had ever bothered to discover my cappuccino and brownie preferences.

If you want to read more, find the book here:

If you want to read Plotting and Planning, find it here:

Both are only 99 cents. Don't get me started on the devaluation of books
because so many of us underprice our writing. I've been forced to jump on that bandwagon and resent it more than I resent E.L. James' success.

A Hot Encounter from FOR MY MASTER--a foursome, anyone?

The edict from TPTB at the Book Boyfriends Cafe weekly blog hop is to give y'all a "Hot Encounter" between our H&H. Or, in the case of menage authors, our H&H&H. Or maybe, as in the below scene, our H&H&H&H.

Here's part of the hot hot hot scene. Don't want to give you too much--you'll have to read the entire story for that!

Toby pulled Kathie's thighs apart. Her hips jerked involuntarily and she moaned. Darla chuckled and tugged on the nubbin of proud flesh before plunging one long, red-tipped finger into Kathie’s slit. Excitement shot through her. She cried out, startled by the invasion, more shocked by her response to a woman.

Ross leaned over and thrust his tongue into her open mouth as she came, his hands on her breasts. Darla withdrew and massaged Kathie’s clit.

Writhing within her bonds, Kathie opened her eyes to look deep into Ross’s brown gaze. Beyond him, she could see Darla kissing Toby while continuing to play with Kathie’s cunt, alternately fingering her snatch and flicking her clit.

Another hand touched her—a man’s hand, she thought. But the hand couldn’t belong to Ross—he was cupping her breasts and pinching her nipples, which was unbelievably arousing, combined as it was with Darla’s fingers in Kathie’s pussy. Toby was stroking Kathie’s inner thighs up and down with gentle fingertips. The lazy caress kept her pulsing.

She didn’t stop coming until Darla stopped. Ross straightened to unzip his shorts while Toby urged Darla to bend over the table between Kathie’s spread legs. Darla kissed Kathie’s naked cunt while presenting her raised ass to her partner, who lifted her skirt and opened his pants. He had a long cock—not as thick as Ross’s or as dark, but quite a tool nevertheless. Kathie’s pulse quickened as she watched, watched and anticipated with a rush of honey moistening her pussy. She pushed her cunt harder into Darla’s lips.

Toby fondled himself for a moment then aimed his rod to enter Darla from behind with a long, slow surge. Darla’s gasp sent warm breath floating over Kathie’s clit while she watched Toby grip Darla’s round hips as he took her.

She’d never thought she’d take part in such a dirty, sexy scene and didn’t know how she felt about it. The she remembered what Ross had said. Just let go…

Here's what the story is about:

Agent Kathie Belmont has long lusted after her boss, Ross Guerrero, but has never plucked up the courage to even flirt with him. Could he be the strong but tender Master she craves?

Ross wants Kathie in his life—on her knees. But the constraints of their jobs with an ultra-secret US security agency have come between them.

Then the sadistic drug trafficker El Silencio is tempted into a deal with Ross’s undercover persona—a deal that will go down at a BDSM party. With Kathie disguised as his sex slave, Ross sets out to bring down the criminal gang, and perhaps to tempt Kathie into performing her role for him…forever.

A Sexy Sporty V-Day Snippet (#99cents #romance #NewAdult #boxedset #sexysnippets)

It's been my pleasure to participate in three boxed sets in the last few months. Working with other authors has been very gratifying, stimulating and inspiring.

I wrote Naughty Balls for the Naughty Literati's new Valentine's Day boxed set. Candidly, I've never cared for Valentine's Day, especially since I rarely have a date for that evening. There's nothing more calculated to make a person feel like a loser, but with time I have come to realize that unless a relationship is on a very firm foundation, one can't expect a V-Day date. And as I'm dating around at this point, I'm destined to spend V-Day with my computer watching cat videos on Facebook.

Oh,well.

That was the fate confronting my heroine, Penny, in Naughty Balls. But, being an avid basketball player, she instead went to shoot a few hoops in her college gym, where she found Orlando Havens, another player without a date on V-Day night.

So here's my seven-sentence sexy snippet...

But wait! you cry. Who are the Naughty Literati?

We’re a group of authors who’ve come together to showcase our epic talents in stories filled with powerful eroticism and satisfying romance. Our tales range from heartwarming and sweet to scorching hot erotic; medieval to futuristic; humans to aliens and shape-shifters; vanilla committed couples to kinky ménage fun.

Now, here's the snippet:

I stared at his chest to avoid getting trapped by his gaze again. But his chest was ripped like the rest of him and shiny with sweat. Not gross sweat, sexy sweat.

I wanted to lick it.

I blinked, startled by the thought.

I wanted to lick Orlando Havens’ chest.

Actually, I wanted to do a lot more than lick Orlando’s chest.

Swoon Worthy? You be the Judge. Naughty Balls by Suz deMello

My assignment this week from TPTB at Book Boyfriends Cafe is to deliver a single, swoonworthy line from my hero.

I've picked Orlando Havens, the hot basketball player from Naughty Balls, to deliver this mega-fantastic line.

The story is about two college basketball players who find themselves alone on the evening of Valentine's Day.

More heat shifted into light and color as I came, moaning into his mouth, clutching him close. I eased my mouth away from his and rested my cheek against him, panting.
My skin cooled, and I was quivering. He held me tight and lowered his leg until my feet were again on the floor.
I tipped my head back and regarded him. “Wow.”
He chuckled. “I’ve only started playing with your fine l’il body, baby girl.”
Oh, my.

If you like what you read, score a copy of the entire Naughty Hearts boxed set. You'll find Naughty Balls in it :) Incidentally, Naughty Hearts is our steamy boxed set with twelve stories revolving around that most romantic of holidays, Valentine’s Day. Join us on this naughty journey!

Evoking a Mood--Highland Vampire by Suz deMello (@MFRW_ORG #MFRWHooks #highland)

I love to write about setting, because setting is a great way to evoke a

mood in the reader. That may be the reason I love Gothics. Damsels in distress

in mysterious castles with broody owners...Yum. I used to adore Victoria Holt,

Mary Stewart and Daphne du Maurier even before I really got into reading and

writing romance.

Here's the beginning of a Gothic I wrote a few years ago, a short story

called Highland Vampire:

I had fled as fast and as far as I could. I could run no farther than to the edge of the world, here at the northwestern corner of Scotland.
The gloaming was deep upon the land when I found Kilburn Castle. Isn’t that what Scots called it, the gloaming? That mysterious time between day and night, when blue dusk dims the sky and magical beings wander forth.

I let my little rented Vauxhall roll to a stop and considered the broody hulk of a castle high on a hill above the sea, silhouetted against the deepening night. The crash of the waves against the cliff was interrupted by a car roaring out of the fortress’s gate. It sped past me, almost clipping my bumper in its haste, and raced down the hill, its headlights switching on as it traversed a curve in the narrow road.

Here's what the story is about:
Natasha Desmond is a woman on the run. But the castle in which she seeks refuge may harbor a greater menace. Though she welcomes the attentions of the castle's broody owner, she awakens with two tiny punctures on the side of her neck...

Shelbie Tempts Rick in Kinky Toes by Suz deMello (#footfetish @fetlife #kink)

Today my assignment from the Book Boyfriends Cafe weekly blog hop is...seduction. How does one of my heroines seduce my hero?

Well, Shelbie already has a leg up, so to speak, since she's a footwear designer and Rick is a shoe and foot fetishist. In this scene, she really tempts him:

Shelbie led Rick into her suite.
She’d painted a mural on the wall. Heliotrope on pale green, a giant Victorian boot, complete with pointy toe, button hooks and a kitten heel. Her bed was in the shape of a shoe—a Shelbie Sexy Sandal, with the straps made of metal bands painted heliotrope. They crisscrossed high above the mattress. The open closet door revealed not only racks of couture outfits but shelf after shelf of shoes, hers as well as those of other designers.
Rick gazed around the room, open-mouthed. She could see a tent forming at the front of his pants.
She raised her hands, crossed them at the wrist and grabbed one of the bed’s high metal rails, deliberately displaying herself. “See anything you like?”

Here's what the story's about:

Genre: contemporary erotic romance

Shelbie Nathanson resents Rick Saldano's ascension to C.O.O. of her family's shoe company, a job she's wanted all her life. But she can't resist his red-hot, sexy style of lovemaking... one that focuses on her passion: shoes.

Here's where you can score a copy. Enjoy!

A Sexy #Menage Snippet ~~ Suz deMello (#erotica #romance #sexysnippets)

Today's sexy snippet is from Gypsy Witch, contemporary paranormal erotic romance...with a M/F/M menage! Yay!

Here's what the short story is about:

The Sacramento Sheriff's Department is no place for airy-fairy wimps, and Ben McCullough is the toughest of the tough. He tells himself he's bedding luscious Elena Lautari only because she's a babe, not because she's a card-carrying member of the Northern California Church of Wicca. Ben thinks she's a feather away from an arrest for fraud, since she makes a living telling fortunes and making charms for the lovelorn. He can't see her as a lifelong mate even though she's more than a match for him in the sack, and losing her is unthinkable.

But Elena is the real deal, a modern witch of much power and even more restraint. When her daughter, Gina, steals her mother's spell book and uses it to shatter the fabric of existence and release an ancient evil, Elena must put reality back in place—even if she loses Ben in the process. Will Ben and Elena's fragile love be lost with the revelation of her magic?

Maybe, but there are others ready to heal her battered heart. When Ben's partner attempts to claim Elena, will Ben move aside or move in?

And here's the sexy seven-sentence snippet:
...the cottage was unlit and dim. Grabbing her, Ben hustled her into her bedroom while Jake followed. Once there, both men started ripping at her clothes. Jake knelt to unbutton her denim shorts while Ben pulled her tie-dyed T-shirt over her head, revealing a leopard-print bra. He deftly unsnapped the center catch, and her breasts bounced free. Her big, dark areolas crinkled in the cottage’s cooler air, the nipples pointing. He tumbled her onto the bed and nested his face between her lush mounds.
