Fight "Love's Great War" along with Linda Andrews

I love Halloween. And not just because it celebrates my favorite food group: chocolate. In Phoenix, Arizona, it symbolizes the end of the 100+ F heat. Even the air smells different. So when I start out writing my World War 1 era romances, I couldn't wait to write on Halloween. But then, my mother said something that nearly caused my heart to stop.

She didn't celebrate her first Halloween until she was in her teens, in the 1950s. Ack! That was 36 years too late.

But then I remembered my favorite Halloween story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and I felt for sure somewhere, someone in America was celebrating this important holiday.

I lucked out while reading a schoolteacher's diary during World War 1. Not too far in the narrative, she mentioned celebrating the holiday with presentations of poems, dialogues and readings by her students
followed by a dance and refreshments of cake and cookies provided by the mothers.

Halloween was saved! Yay!

To celebrate the release of my new Halloween historical, I'm giving away these earrings to someone who leaves a comment and tells me their favorite Halloween memory.

Now, a word from our sponsor, er, here's an excerpt:

Phoebe ducked inside. A shriek quickly followed.
Gabe's heart stopped. She was in trouble. The lantern handle bit into his palm. He burst through the door, fist raised.
A stooped figure stirred the ashes to life in the fireplace at the end of the room. Phoebe's leaf collection carpeted the floor. Flames licked the neat stack of wood in the hearth. The light blazed enough so he could see Phoebe in the arms of a copper-skin Indian. Then she rose on tiptoe and kissed the stranger's cheek.
No wonder she hadn't wanted to hear his stupid stories. Setting his branches and pins on the counter, he rushed out of the house and back into the woods.
Phoebe Monpetit had already given away her heart.

Blurb:

Her heart can't give him up. Her head can't trust him.

Everyone Phoebe Monpetit has ever loved eventually abandoned her. Even Gabriel Stephens, the man she thought she'd marry. For the last twelve years, she's muddled through alone, cobbling a life together.

Gabriel took the first opportunity to escape his family's constant fighting and rarely looked back. When war explodes across Europe, he learns what his cowardice has really cost him.

This Halloween, he'll use every trick he can to win back Phoebe's heart.

Will she keep her true feelings covered, or will she let Gabe unmask her heart?

Love office romance? Read "Kinky Toes" (#MFRWAuthor #iamreading #footfetish @Fetlife)

Today's Book hook focuses on an old favorite--the office romance. But this is an office romance with a twist--or even a kink or two or three. Here's what it's about:

Genre: contemporary erotic romance

Shelbie Nathanson resents Rick Saldano's ascension to C.O.O. of her family's shoe company, a job she's wanted all her life. But she can't resist his red-hot, sexy style of lovemaking... one that focuses on her passion: shoes.

And here are my bodacious Book Hook sentences:

He unbuttoned her dress halfway down to the waist, and dropped a light kiss on the upper curve of her left breast. “Cute bra,” he said, pleasure in his voice.
“I didn’t know that lingerie was one of your fetishes.”
“Everyone loves black lace. You know, I truly do hope that work won’t come in the way of…of the fun we could have together.” He scoped her body up and down. Especially down. She heard his breath hitch as he looked at her high heeled, strappy shoes.
She grinned at him. “I want to show you something you’ll really love.

If you want to know what Shelbie showed Rick, buy the short story here:

Boldly go "Breaking the Rules" with Mel Curtis...and a freebie! (#free #iamreading)

To say Jack and Vivian Gordon’s marriage has been rocky would be an understatement. The Gordons have been on a roller coaster of love and lust, but can’t seem to get on the same page at the same time. This power couple needs a time-out to find their happily ever after.  And life coach to Hollywood’s rich and powerful, Cora Rule, has just the solution – have the couple sign their divorce papers in a safe room…and lock them inside.

Excerpt:

Vivian Gordon had a problem.
A six-foot-two-inch hunk of a problem.
Sex with Jack hadn’t solved the problem.  Marrying him hadn’t solved the problem.  Leaving him hadn’t solved the problem.
The problem was that Viv loved her husband, but Jack didn’t love her.
It wasn’t as if Jack was incapable of love, as some of Hollywood moguls seemed to be.  No, Jack had passion aplenty, but it was for the NBA team he owned, the L.A. Flash, not for a woman.  Not for Viv.
Viv watched Jack swim his daily laps with strong, commanding strokes.  Heaven forbid Jack didn’t get his laps in.  If he didn’t, he was the biggest shit.
Her Gianvito Rossi black suede lace up heels clicked slowly across the white marble tile as she approached the patio doors in the house they’d once shared.  Her cadence was one of a doomed prisoner being shown the open door of the gas chamber.
This is the end.
And she’d chosen the execution date.

Meet The Countess of Huntleigh in Mariana Gabrielle's "Royal Regard"

After fifteen years roaming the globe, the Countess of Huntleigh returns to England with her dying husband. She soon finds herself plagued by terrible troubles: a new title, estate, and sizable fortune; marked attentions from the marriage mart; the long-awaited reunion with her loving family; and a growing friendship with King George IV.

Settling into her new life, this shy-but-not-timid, not-so-young lady faces society’s censure, the Earl’s decline, false friends with wicked agendas, and the singular sufferings of a world-wise wallflower. Guided by her well-meaning husband, subject to interference by a meddlesome monarch, she must now choose the dastardly rogue who says he loves her, the charming French devil with a silver tongue, or the quiet country life she has traveled the world to find.

Excerpt:
When she made a point of seeking him out at the end of the evening to say she and Lord Huntleigh would be leaving soon, he blocked her husband’s view of them, then everyone else’s, half-hidden behind a pillar, just on the right side of proper. She looked over his shoulder to make sure no one was watching while he gently tugged the glove from her left hand.
“I shall return this to you one day soon,” he said, putting it in the pocket of his tailcoat. “Until I do,” he ran his fingertip over the back of her hand, then dragged his fingernails across her palm, “you might consider what skin you next want to bare to me.” She gasped. “I have ideas of my own, of course, but I would hate to disappoint if you were longing for me to touch you elsewhere.”
Her face lost both its color and its objections, so he pushed his luck, moving his light contact from wrist to forearm to elbow, “How I wish it were your stocking I had just removed and the back of your knee inviting my kiss, not the crook of your elbow.” She looked as though the breath caught in her throat might keep her from speaking the rest of her life.

Her Sexy Halloween Costume Gets His Attention in "Seducing the Hermit" (@MFRW_ORG #iamreading #Halloween #romance)

Deejay Valerie Percy rejects the phony life she's led in L.A. and travels to remote Takinsha Island, Alaska, determined to start over. She looks for a fuck-buddy, an accessory she considers more important than mascara. She wants a warm, outgoing man to laugh with her, hang out with her and shag her silly.

She doesn’t think she’ll encounter any difficulty in Alaska, where the odds of men to women are twenty to one. But as locals say, the odds are good, but the goods are…odd.
She falls for Fisher Chugatt, a loner who rejects any relationship. But Cupid has other plans for this couple, and so does Valerie. She doesn’t waste any time, seducing Fisher within a few hours of arriving.

Anal sex in the shower, hummers on the couch and a spectacular encounter beneath the Northern Lights seal the deal in Valerie’s mind. In love with Fisher, she wants it all: home, husband, babies…his babies. But Fisher can’t banish shadows from his past that prevent him from committing to Valerie.

In this part of the story, confirmed bachelor Fisher is finding it more and more difficult to resist Valerie's allure:

...he could see green glitter in her golden hair, on her cheeks and eyelids. Full makeup accentuated her delicate beauty, disguising the hard-nosed, determined woman underneath.
"Wow," he managed to say.
"Wow yourself." Smiling, she handed him a glass of wine. "Tell me about your costume."
"First, let's toast the evening. Thank you for this." He waved his glass, narrowly missing her hair.
"Now who's the klutz?" Her grin teased.
He laughed. "I guess that makes up for the soup incident. No, half of the soup, since I didn't actually get you."
"Aw, who's counting?" She clinked her glass against his, then sipped her wine.

Chasing the Dead with Keta Diablo

Blurb:

The Apache kidnapped me to dispel an evil ghost from their village. If I tell them I don't possess the same skills my madre did, they'll cut my throat and feed me to the dogs. Celesta was the best spirit chaser in all of New Mexico before she died.

The most I can hope for is that Emmett, my fiancĂ©, will rescue me. Is he capable of such a thing? Poppy must not have thought so because he sent Deacon Bannister to save me. Deacon…the man who walked away days before our wedding a year ago. The man who still melts my bones after one look.

We're running for our lives from Uday, the vaporous ghoul tracking us. He wants Sacheen, the beautiful maiden banished from the Apache village who travels with us. The warrior killed her father when Sacheen refused to marry him, and then Sacheen's brother killed Uday.

The ghost's powers grow stronger every minute on our journey back to El Vaquero...and so does my love for Deacon.

Excerpt
A shadow hovered near the fires, ducking in between stalks of cacti and other scrub brush. Maddie drew a deep breath and ambled forward with Elan beside her. Amid the dissonant chants and prayers, warriors brandishing spears and shields hollered into the gray mist. Maddie squinted, hoping to catch sight of the ghoul the others couldn't see. Only powerful shamans and spirit chasers had trained themselves to look upon the face of a dead spirit. A ripple of fear spread through her limbs and shivered down her spine when la fantasma appeared before her.
A mass of black patterns and swirls marred his enraged face. His eyes were hollow and black until a den of serpents slithered from the sockets–a deception the spirit had learned in his brief time in the underworld.
Maddie swallowed hard and sneaked a glance at Elan. Standing tall and looking formidable, she had to admire the man's courage. "It is you he seeks to destroy, Elan, to forge a path to Sacheen. I will go forth on my own now."
Elan shook his head, his expression one of disbelief. "Why would you put yourself in such
danger? We wait and see what the dead man will do."
"No. It is what he wants, for all in the village to fear him. Only then does his true power unfold. I will meet his challenge; let him know I am here to banish him back to the dead." "Although I cannot", she whispered under her breath.
The ghost twisted and turned, retreating back from the fire, only to appear seconds later at another location in camp. He screamed and howled, the otherworldly sounds rumbling through the village like a murderous dust storm.
Maddie shrugged aside Elan's grip on her elbow and walked forward. "Madre, be with me," she said to the ground. The moon had not shown its face this night but a smattering of a million stars gave enough light for Maddie to focus on the grim outline of the wretch. "Lift up your eyes dead spirit and hear my words."
An inhuman screech sent a blast of wind in her direction. It lashed her face and whipped her long hair into a frenzy.
"You are small and weak. I do not fear you!" she screamed, bewildered by the words spewing from her mouth. "The wolf has sung your passing and the bear has grumbled low. Sing your death song and return to the underworld."
The wailing chants of the shamans echoed behind her.
Ignoring her warning, Elan suddenly appeared beside her, only to be struck to the ground when the ghoul unleashed a stream of lightning spikes from the sky. Elan moaned, clutched his broken arm and attempted to rise.
"Stay down!" Maddie ground out between clenched teeth.
Her mother's voice rode the crest of her fear. Be strong, Madrid, try again.
Her knees shook and her spine curled, but she took another step forward. "Your breath has moved to another world. You must remain with it. Do you hear me, dead spirit? You are no longer welcome here. Your relatives have said farewell and so must you, never to return."
A refrain from the Apache against her back bolstered her courage—a roar of cheers and the synchronized trampling of moccasins beating the ground.
Torrents of rain fell from the sky, pounding Maddie into the earth beneath her feet. Wet dirt spiraled up her nose and debilitating pain wracked her body. A hand clamped over her arm. When Maddie realized it belonged to Elan, a sigh of relief mingled with the cold blast of air surrounding them. Sacheen's brother pulled her against his wet body and crawled toward camp, dragging her with him.
A triumphant scream from the ghost rent the air, pitching the warriors into a cowering retreat. The cold, gray dawn swept over camp. Shivering with despair, Maddie turned to Elan. "His power is great."
Out of breath and still clutching his arm, he nodded.
Maddie raised a fist to the sky. "We have failed this night, dead spirit, but we will not the next time we meet."

One Way or Another--Jade Cain's got you covered

Meet Ethan Kovac and Isaac Duncan, co-stars of the new sitcom, One Way or Another. Ethan’s ditching a career full of terrible tween movies, while Isaac needs to cash in some of his ‘serious actor’ cred for, well, cash. Ethan’s gay and closeted and not happy about it. Isaac has enough issues as a black man in Hollywood without dealing with rumors about his sexuality too.

Neither of them counted on the red hot chemistry that has them fighting to keep their hands off each other.

When the gossip mags suggest that their epic off-screen bromance is just a front for a sizzling affair, the two men have to play the Hollywood game, and find the line between keeping things private and denying who they are to one another.

Excerpt:

A blonde from TV Guide fires the opening salvo. “You guys have to be so excited to be co-starring with Samantha Jensen. What’s she like to work with?”

“She’s great,” Ethan says truthfully. “We’re old friends. It’s nice to have a chance to work together again.”

“Yeah, you oughta see the two of them on set,” Isaac says. “Trading hair secrets. I think Sam’s trying to teach him how to braid her hair.”

“We gotta do something to keep ourselves busy while the makeup people are oiling you up for your next scene,” Ethan retorts. There’s an easy warmth moving back and forth between them that has nothing to do with the champagne. They’ve been sassing at each other since the first day of shooting. Having an audience to play for just ups the stakes.

“So does that mean we get to see more scenes of you shirtless?” the reporter asks, all but batting her lashes at Isaac.

“You would not believe the money they saved on wardrobe,” Ethan says. “I’m surprised they bothered with pants, have you seen this guy? I started going to the gym just to keep from vanishing behind him.”

The reporters are laughing, which is good for two reasons: they aren’t asking stupid questions, and if they like Ethan and Isaac, they’ll give the show a favorable write up.

After a few minutes of back and forth, the reporters wander on to the next group. “Hair-braiding?” Ethan raises an eyebrow. “Man, that was lame.”

Isaac laughs. “Come on, give me a break. I can’t be witty all the time.”

“Yeah, I know how it is,” Ethan says, sipping from his glass. “Gotta be hard, coasting on nothing but good looks and talent.”

“Sucks to be us, huh?”

Ethan grins. “You saying I’m hot? I’ll take that.”

“Dude, how hard did you hit it last night?” Isaac eyes him with a sly grin. Ethan’s first thought is for the guy Karen sent packing that morning. Does he know? “You were looking rough when you showed up this afternoon.”

Oh, the hangover. “Yeah, my agency party was last night,” Ethan says.

“Don’t get me wrong, ‘rough’ works for you. I’ve seen you show up for shit looking like you rolled out of bed five minutes before and were still half-drunk, and you still wound up on the cover of something.” Isaac shakes his head admiringly. “I forget to shave and people start gossiping about what’s gone wrong.”

“Yeah well, at least you don’t wind up on ‘Top Ten Disney Stars Gone Wild’.” Ethan drains his glass. He tries not to think about Isaac, unshaved and rumpled, lying on equally rumpled sheets, half-awake and wholly-sexy. Stop fantasizing about your co-workers, Kovac.

A Kinky Office Romance--Kinky Toes (@allromance #MFRWAuthor #footfetish #MFRWHooks @fetlife)

Today I hope you're hooked by this kinky, wild office romance.

Designer Shelbie Nathanson resents Rick Saldano’s ascension to C.O.O. of her family’s shoe empire, a job she’s wanted all her life. But she finds it hard to resist when she discovers his imagination in the bedroom is a match for her creativity in the boardroom. His interest in peep toes, slingbacks and stilettos goes beyond the purely professional and into the deeply kinky. She can't resist his red-hot, sexy style of lovemaking... one that focuses on her passion: shoes.

Here's a little snippet with a lot of sexual tension to pique your interest:

In the cab, she became even more aware of him, if that were possible. He was big. Not fat, but solid, sizable, with broad shoulders and an obviously muscular body beneath his suit. She couldn’t help sneaking a peek at his crotch. The suit’s fabric had pulled tight as he sat, tight enough that she could guess that six-foot-two Rick’s body parts were proportional.

Her mood had definitely changed.

He leaned closer, hesitated the tiniest fraction of a second before he brushed his lips against her cheek. Shocked, she jerked away, but he didn’t move, his gaze still pinned to hers.

A Hunky Water Sprite and a #giveaway: J.C. MacKenzie's "The Shucker’s Booktique

After her fiancé dumps her and her beloved Aunt Jenny goes missing, Willa Eklund travels to Lobster Cove with a broken heart to search for Jenny while running her bookstore. When a mysterious man visits the Shucker's Booktique on a stormy night drenched in rain and covered in mud, Willa's heart melts under his stormy gaze. She wants Lon and the answers he may have, but he also has a secret. Can Willa trust him?

Lon Devlin is a Tempest, a water sprite who can only take a human form during stormy nights. He rides the waves, lives by the tides, and nothing can hold him down, not even a beautiful woman. When he visits his mortal friend, he discovers she's missing and her intriguing niece has taken her place. He wants Willa, but he also wants answers. What happened to Jenny?

'

Excerpt:

Thump! Thump! Thump!
No! She gasped. It couldn’t be. The banging on the front door of the booktique had to be a figment of her imagination. She couldn’t will Lon into existence. Why would he come back? Especially if he was involved. Unless…cold ice prickled up her spine…unless he needed to eliminate her to take care of loose ends.
No. Crazy thoughts, Willa. He could’ve taken care of her the night before. No, her heart hammered against her chest for a different reason. But it didn’t matter. The knocking on the door wouldn’t, couldn’t be him.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Could it? She clutched her hot mug in both hands and turned toward the doorway leading to the bookstore. From the kitchen in the back room, she had a clear view through the store to the front door, but not who stood on the other side.
“Willa!” Lon growled. “Wake up and let me in!”
Willa gasped and almost dropped her cup. The tea sloshed around and some spilled over her
hands. It burned, but she didn’t move. She couldn’t breathe. Somehow the air got trapped inside her throat. Why was he here? What did he want?
Oh God, let it be me!

A Second Chance at Love in Tina Gayle's STORMY

A widower, a divorcee, co-workers, lovers...a future together...marriage?

Consoling each other for years over each other’s misfortune, Karen and Daniel turn a friendship into a weekend of unbridled red-hot passion. The heat between them leads to thoughts of a future together. That is…

Until children, an ex-husband, an unexpected heart attack, a conniving trophy wife, guilt, and personal choices come between them. Will the heat of their passion let them break from the past and move into the future?

Excerpt:

“Daniel, if you’re in the bathroom come out this minute.”
The entrance opened, and he stood in the doorway.
Problem: he wore only a towel.
Aw, shit. She didn’t need to see his bare chest covered in crisp dark hair, the sculptured muscles of his arms and shoulders, developed pecs, and thick thighs. Damn, how was she supposed to resist such temptation?
Desire added with the anxiety she’d already experienced on her drive and lit her anger. “Why the hell didn’t you answer your phone? I’ve been calling and texting you for the last two hours.”
A confused frown passed over his handsome face. Instead of responding, he stepped to the bedside table. He lifted his cell phone and clicked a few buttons.
Unable to contain her impatience, Karen stalked forward.
He glanced up when she grew closer and showed her the phone. “I don’t understand it. I don’t show receiving any messages or calls. The signals must have gotten lost because of the storm.”
She’d suspected as much. Still, she refused to let him off the hook because he could’ve contacted her before he left town. “You should’ve called me. But no...” Having endured his inability to communicate for months now, she stabbed her finger through the air at him. “You never call. You always expect me to phone you. Well, I’ve had it.”
The distance closed between them and she stood inches from him. Her fingertip tapped his chest. Static electricity sparked between them and her fist unfolded. She stumbled backward.
“Whoa.” Daniel caught her around the waist with one hand and held her close. His phone landed on the bed before he circled his other arm around her. His strong grip held her steady and didn’t allow her to step away. “You’re right. I guess I’m just use to...”
“Don’t say it. I’ve heard it too many times. Sharon might have resented the interruptions but I’m not her. I’m never in any type of meeting that you could possibly disrupt.” Karen spread her hands over his chest and worked to maintain a smidgen of distance. Nevertheless with him so near, his warmth surrounding her in a seductive cocoon, she had to fight the urge to melt against him.
“Yes, but if I called you whenever I wanted we’d never get off the phone.” The husky tone of his voice pulled her gaze upward.

Feel the magic with "GYPSY WITCH"

It's a hoodoo Halloween!

My gypsy witch lives in the very mundane town of Sacramento, but she's anything but dull, as this scene reveals:

Elena stepped between the rogue knight and the cops. “Get thee gone.” Her voice was a low growl as she confronted Sinister. She tossed one last substance onto him, then ripped the topaz from around her neck, breaking the chain. She thrust it at Sinister. Power flowed from the gem. Golden rays spurted from between her fingers and arced toward him. He was thrown violently backward and up into his niche. He melted into the stone.

The night was suddenly still. The rain and lightning stopped. The wind died
down. Elena unclenched her fingers and dropped the topaz into her pocket. The gem’s residual glow pulsed through her skirt’s thin cloth. She sighed and said, “Okay, show’s over. Into the car with you."

Here's what the story's about:

The Sacramento Sheriff's Department is no place for airy-fairy wimps, and Ben McCullough is the toughest of the tough. He tells himself he's bedding the luscious Elena Lautari only because she's a babe, not because she's a card-carrying member of the Northern California Church of Wicca. Ben thinks she's a feather away from an arrest for fraud, since she makes a living telling fortunes and making charms for the lovelorn. He can't see her as a lifelong mate even though she's more than a match for him in the sack, and losing her is unthinkable.

But Elena is the real deal, a modern witch of much power and even more restraint. When her daughter, Gina, steals her mother's spell book and uses it to shatter the fabric of existence and release an ancient evil, Elena must put reality back in place—even if she loses Ben in the process. Will Ben and Elena's fragile love be lost with the revelation of her magic?

Maybe, but there are others ready to heal her battered heart. When Ben's partner attempts to claim Elena, will Ben move aside or move in?
